The Unexpected Gift of Sobriety: My $110,760 Soberversary
Almost eight years ago, I started a journey that didn't just transform my life—it felt like I finally started living it. One of the early, slightly rebellious motivators was a simple phone app. It didn't just track my alcohol-free hours; it tallied the money I was saving.
Each year, I mark my sobriety anniversary with a special "soberversary" gift. For my fifth year, I bought my dream car—the convertible you see in my photos—and I paid for it in cash. I adore that car, but what I truly cherish is what it represents. Driving along the beach now, I feel a sense of freedom, joy, and vibrant sobriety that I never could have imagined. That car is a tangible symbol of a life well-earned and deeply appreciated. I've never driven it after even one drop of alcohol.
Beyond the car, I also invested a significant chunk of the money I saved and donated to causes close to my heart. While I’m not usually one for flashy possessions, this one truly felt like the gift of a lifetime—a testament to the dedication I poured into reclaiming my health. It brings me immense joy every single day.
What's Your "Number"?
My story raises a core, quiet question: What could you do with the money you might be spending on something that is actively detrimental to your health, your well-being, and your future?
We're talking about something that accelerates the aging process, is linked to seven types of cancer (so far), and contributes to countless other diseases, all while often stealing your self-worth and leaving you with those miserable hangover headaches.
Let's look at my own experience as a successful professional. I used to spend an estimated $13,845 annually on alcohol. Over eight years, that adds up to a staggering $110,760. The numbers add up quickly.
But the real cost wasn't financial. The deeper losses from daily drinking—lost days, strained relationships, poor food choices, and the toll on my self-worth and inner calm—were far more impactful.
So, I ask you: What is your "number"? What will you buy, experience, or finally stop worrying about when you let go of something you shouldn't be wasting your well-earned resources on?
