Don’t Call Me Lucky
“The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” — Thomas Jefferson.
This timeless quote resonates deeply with me. Have you ever been told you are "lucky" to have a strong relationship, good health, or a happy home? While these comments are often well-intentioned, they can miss the mark. What appears as "luck" is often the direct result of consistent effort, resilience, and dedicated choices.
In my younger years, being called "lucky" felt like a compliment. Yet, after decades of navigating a demanding corporate career and making significant personal shifts—overcoming challenges with my health, smoking, and alcohol—the word "lucky" began to feel like an oversight of the deep commitment and perseverance involved.
For instance, after years of diligent effort to prioritize my fitness, I was told I was "lucky" to be "so tiny." Similarly, my current enjoyment of early morning workouts, a habit I cultivated through consistent practice despite late nights in a corporate role, was once attributed to "luck." The truth is, these outcomes stem from making consistent choices, not from chance.
My sometimes well-behaved dog is a testament to countless hours of patient training and walks. My fulfilling friendships were built on me being bold enough to introduce myself to strangers and a commitment to genuine connection. The joy of living in my current home involved waking at 3 AM to scour new listings, spending months searching, and then many late nights transforming the space. It certainly did not happen by chance!
Celebrating the Journey, Not Just the Destination
Those who truly understand the journey often say "congratulations" or "great work." They recognize the dedication that goes into achieving goals. While some undoubtedly start with more opportunities—a painful reality that must be acknowledged—the ability to work hard for what we want remains within our reach.
My own journey from a demanding corporate Director to an Integrative Health Coach was not an act of luck. It was a path I meticulously prepared for, pushing through night school while managing a full-time role. I wanted a passionate pursuit for my future, and I found that passion in helping people build healthier lives, leveraging neuroscience and habit formation to create lasting, positive change.
Your achievements, whether big or small, are a testament to your effort. Let's celebrate the journey and the dedication behind your success.
